The supreme court

After watching the video in class about how the supreme court works was very helpful. The supreme court originally had 6 chief justices but over time the number of Chief Justices increased to 10 which is what we have today. The supreme court receives about 10,000 petitions a year and they choose which cases they want to go forward with. Majority of the supreme court cases that we see are appeals from lower courts and these cases come from the federal level courts. They won't just take cases that are appeals but they will take cases from the lower federal court that cannot agree on how to interpret the law involved. they accept a wide variety of cases every year. By taking a case that involves an issue that has led to differing opinions in lower courts.

Supreme Court hands Trump administration a victory in immigration battle

On Tuesday the Supreme Court gave the Trump administration a victory in the battle to clamp down on illegal immigration by making it easier to detain immigrants with criminal records. Most people are reading this or maybe don't understand what this means, here's an example,  Federal immigration authorities can detain immigrants awaiting deportation anytime after they have been released from prison on criminal charges. The right-wing conservatives argued that if there was a harsher process on illegal immigration or illegal immigrants then we can start to eliminate this problem. On the other hand, the left-wing liberals argue that the people who get involved with immigration should have a hearing to argue their release while deportation proceedings go forward. With the 5-4 decision on Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled against them.  https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-administration-notches-victory-in-immigration-battle-with-supreme-court-ruling

Which of the Eight Values of Free Expression is most important to the First Amendment

Image
Out of all eight values, I believe that number 4 has a big impact on the First Amendment because the fourth value is about Individual Self-Fulfilment. Free speech enables individuals to express themselves and thereby create their own identity- and, in the process perhaps, find kindred spirits. Freedom of speech thus becomes an aspect of human dignity, human agency, and autonomy.  A recent event that is a perfect example for Individual Self-Fulfilment through expression is the Women's Right Marches that happened in January. These marches took over the streets of Washington D.C. and a lot of women came together to march for what they believe is truly right and just. These people are able to express who they are as supporters of women's rights and fighting for a cause or belief that someone is very passionate about making that person feel like they are doing good. What's also important about this is that these people are able to protest, march, and organize rallies because

The use of Emojis in court cases

San Fransisco prosecutors were trying to prove that a man they recently arrested was involved in a prostitution ring. The evidence that the prosecutor has is Instagram direct messages he sent to a woman. One of the messages reads "Teamwork makes the dream work" with a high heel and money back emojis at the end and prosecutors say that the emojis imply a working relationship between the accused man and women. The defense, on the other hand, says that he was just being flirtatious towards a woman he thought was attractive. In 2017, a couple in Israel was charged thousands of dollars after they were found guilty of using emojis to a landlord signaling that they intended to rent his apartment. After they sent several emojis to the landlord expressing that they want to rent his apartment they just stopped texting him and rented a different apartment.  https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/18/18225231/emoji-emoticon-court-case-reference
